Ransomware in Healthcare

When dealing with mission-critical systems or even individual patient records, data loss and time loss from cyberattacks and ransomware are unacceptable for healthcare firms. Our recent whitepaper “10-minute Guide to Healthcare Ransomware Protection” illustrates how these threats have proliferated in to an industry-wide and world-wide epidemic.

While most companies have implemented some type of formal backup or disaster recovery plan, many in healthcare are regrettably learning too late just how unprepared they are. This is especially true of small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs) with limited IT resources, but even larger enterprises are finding themselves at the mercy of attackers because they aren’t properly protected. As a result —under the pressure of an attack — they are not able to recover their systems without significant cost, anguish, and embarrassment.

Evolve IP is the answer. We are helping healthcare customers stop ransomware attacks today by applying guidance offered by the FBI:

  • Creating frequent offsite backups based on each business’ specific requirements
  • Storing multiple copies of backups in environments with unmatched physical security, power redundancy, and data encryption
  • Isolating the backups from production systems so that they aren’t also compromised by the cyberattack
  • Ensuring that backups can be quickly accessed and recovered in the event of a successful attack or incident

For workloads hosted in our Compliance Cloud, Evolve IP helps customers determine the precise time and location of the infection as well as the degree of data compromise. Then our engineers initiate a three-tiered backup, replication, and recovery solution to recover the original data. For each of our clients that have suffered an attack (commonly through an employee email account), their production environment was restored quickly and accurately. Depending on the level of service selected by the customer, we will recreate the exact conditions that existed 15 minutes prior to a ransomware attack, without any substantial data loss. As a result, restorations that might otherwise take days or weeks to accomplish, can be completed within a matter of minutes. A recent case study example of a ransomware recovery illustrates the full range of capabilities of the Evolve IP.

The customer was completely shut down with more than 30 servers and nearly 10 TB of data encrypted by the hackers.
