Why go through the effort of implementing a BYOD and Mobility strategy?
- Productivity Boost
People work best when they are comfortable. With Desktop as a Service (DaaS), productivity is not device specific. If a worker is accustomed to a Mac, they can use their own to access their virtual work environment with the comfort and ease of using their personal device.
Although mobility is often lumped in with BYOD, it has its own productivity-boosting features worth mentioning. Your work DaaS desktop can be accessed through any device from anywhere (assuming Internet connection) at any time.
Whether it is answering calls to your office phone number through your mobile phone or accessing your company files from your tablet, productivity is no longer limited to your office desk.
- Minimize Device Support
One of the challenges with maintaining physical desktops is that issues are local. Hardware or software issues need to be fixed on that specific desktop to get employees back to work. With DaaS, your employee can simply access their work environment through another machine, picking up right where they left off. This saves time and energy for executives, users, and the IT team. Technical issues are no longer an excuse for lack of productivity.
With a BYOD program, employees are responsible for their own devices, so your organization’s IT staff are no longer bogged down with users’ PC hardware and mobile device issues. If an associate’s cell phone gets lost or stolen, the administrator can simply wipe the company data from the device with the click of a mouse, while the employee deals with buying a new phone.
- Legacy Technology
As new applications and technology constantly emerge, IT departments often run into the problem of installing a new piece of technology. For example, Worker A is using a personal device and Worker B is using a company-issued machine. With Desktop as a Service (DaaS), the IT department only has to figure out how to install the application on the uniform virtual desktop, as opposed to a variety of machines and operating systems.

In my personal experience, the first person who brings their own device to IT has a title that starts with a “C”. IT gets what they want, when the “C” levels get what they need. Simple.
On the flip side, you’ve been inundated with articles about the millennial workforce. And while I may not agree with everything being written (we have a large and incredibly productive millennial workforce), one this is sure: Millennials value technology flexibility. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, half of the nation’s workforce will be made up of associates born after 1980 by the year 2020. A recent CIO.com article states: “Organizations that won’t support BYOD (whether because of a stringent regulatory environment or lack of understanding of how to implement it safely), and instead dictate the corporate-owned devices and operating systems employees must use, will be at a significant disadvantage attracting this demographic (millennials).”
- Specific Businesses have a significant need
Distributed enterprises, multi-location businesses, mobile workforces, shift-workers. It goes without saying that these businesses have device support issues that are greater than a standard single location or single shift business. These businesses would benefit greatly from a flexible computing or communications policy.
- You already have a BYOD problem
This is the most important thing to take from this blog. If you don’t have a strategy for BYOD, if you don’t have options for mobility, your employees will figure out how to do it anyway. Surprising devices will show up in your network, VPN requests from unknown machines will appear, email WILL get accessed on mobile devices. Many writers are referring to this as the ‘consumerization of IT’. Thank you Apple. Thank you Google. Better to embrace the inevitable and gain the benefits listed above than fight against your workforce.
