Cloud Backup Services Critical: Notes from VeeamOn 2017

Cloud Backup Services Critical- Notes from VeeamOn 2017
May 20, 2017 / Evolve IP

One of the great things about working with world-class technology partners for our cloud backup services is the world class learning they offer through the conferences that they host. Most recently, the partner was Veeam and the conference was VeeamON 2017 where business availability in the cloud was one of the key educational topics. The way Veeam frames the conversation around current business demands and the need for comprehensive cloud backup services is very simple and compelling. It is also consistent with one of Evolve IP’s consistent theme: the importance of recoverability.

Veeam is essentially focused on supporting business availability at every turn, and they have designed their backup products accordingly. Their mission is to help customers protect data by backing up data as it moves:

  1. To the cloud
  2. From the cloud, and
  3. Within the cloud

As these issues were discussed, they stressed the importance a broad range of issues that drive the need for on premises protection, but also for cloud-based protection such as cloud backup services and DR capabilities. One speaker summarized the urgency well when he explained that people have a tendency to think of disasters as “calamitous events”, whereas those are not the only types. And they’re certainly not the most common or relevant types from a business continuity perspective. In emphasizing this point, he shared the idea he coined the “three immutable facts of IT”. Specifically, those facts are: 1) hardware fails, 2) software has bugs, and 3) people make mistakes. Look no further than the recent public cloud outage for an example of how critical human errors can be!

Below, I’m sharing an overview of the cloud backup vision that Veeam shared. You will see the inherent focus on flexibility, hybrid strategies, and on being prepared for anything.

To the cloud– The first key element is using the cloud backup services. The cloud can be used as a target for offsite backups and as a platform for disaster recovery. Cloud backups can be used to eliminate tape libraries for reliable and more easily usable long-term storage. Better yet, stored backups and server replicas in the cloud form the perfect platform for rapid response and recovery from data-impacting and service-impacting events such as ransomware attacks and common server failures. From the cloud– Companies are increasingly turning to the efficiency of Software as a Service (SaaS), but a critical element of that should be protection of the data that is generated by that service. True protection of company data is achieved by storing a backup of SaaS-generated data on enterprise owned repositories. The same data protection concept applies to Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). The key consideration and objective for organizations is to abstract their services from the cloud to eliminate cloud lock-in and enable business flexibility.

Within the cloud – This final topic deals with business continuity and ensuring that the business is protected from data or systems access issues. This objective is achieved through multi-cloud data replication and cross-cloud backups. By creating a comprehensive and redundant network of cloud and on-premises back-ups, companies can improve business surety and gain cost efficiencies as well.
