With the sad news of David Bowie’s unexpected passing this week, there were lots of discussions about who saw him in concert, when, and where. Lots of reminiscing, lots of memorials, lots of discussion about how he affected people and influenced culture, and much talk about his genius.
And genius he was.
Bowie wrote many straight ahead rock tunes which had mass appeal. He also wrote many that that were, at the time, cutting edge, bizarre even. And those are often the ones that stand out.
It was because of the unconventional tunes, as well as his constantly evolving looks and personas, that Bowie always seemed to be years ahead, a leader in the music industry and in popular culture.
Passion. Innovation. Taking risks. Being true to himself and his vision.
These are the traits of leadership, whether in music or in business, and are lessons for us all.
