DRaaS stands for Disaster Recovery as a Service. Gartner defines Disaster Recovery as a Service as “the scenario when the service provider manages virtual machine (VM) replication and, optionally, physical machine (PM) replication from the production data center into the cloud, VM/PM activation inside the cloud and recovery exercising within the cloud.”

Disaster recovery (DR) involves a set of policies and procedures to enable the recovery or continuation of vital technology infrastructure and systems following a natural or human-induced disaster. Disaster recovery focuses on the IT or technology systems supporting critical business functions. Basically, DRaaS is cloud disaster recovery – when your DR technology solution resides in the cloud.

How to Select a DRaaS Service Provider

When selecting a DRaaS service provider, there are several key aspects to consider. You should seek a provider that offers data protection and automated options for business continuity, as well as DRaaS solutions.

You need to assess your organizations level of risk and spend accordingly. Some DRaaS service provider solutions only provide basic cloud storage and back up, while others, like Evolve IP, provide true IT disaster recovery with business continuity, so that you know not only know where your data is backed up, but also how and when it will be restored.

Types of DRaaS Solutions

There are several different types of DRaaS solutions, built on different types of technology. Not only are there different technology solutions, there are also three aspect to consider when determining the right DR services, regardless of the type of solution you choose:

  • Source of System – Whether your system is onsite, in your service provider’s cloud, or elsewhere.
  • Recovery Point Objective (RPO) – How current your data is at the recovery site.
  • Recovery Time Objective (RTO) – How long it should take to bring an environment back online once a disaster or major incident is declared.

For example, Evolve IP’s DRaaS ZT (Zerto) solution is a hypervisor-based replication product allowing customers flexibility and complete control over virtual machine replication, failover testing, failover and failback. Unlike traditional array-based replication and BC/DR solutions, DRaaS ZT is software only integrated in the VMware Hypervisor. It uses continuous replication and does not utilize snapshots, which can negatively impact your production environment.
